Bill Clinton is a rock star

Because of the Democratic Convention, I won't be posting as mush this week. I didn't watch much of the game last night, as I was watching the convention. Joe Borchard hit a home run in garbage time (down by five runs in the 8th inning) and Mark Buehrle didn't pitch very well. Garcia goes tonight and the Sox have little chance. I'll feel fine as long as the team doesn't get swept. A 1.5 game deficit is OK with the schedule the Sox have.

So, there you go. Watch the Democrats this week.

I can't believe you're forgoing baseball for the stupid Democratic Convention. The conventions are worthless.

Readers of Ross' blog, here are four reasons not to watch the Democratic or Republican National Conventions:

1. You're not going to hear anything you haven't heard before. Candidates will be spewing political rhetoric that you have already heard a gazillion times. The messages: The democrats want to help the middle class. They hate George W. Bush. The Republicans want to cut taxes. They love George W. Bush. You don't need to hear Bill Clinton or Condoleeza Rice give a speech to know that.
2. It's all preaching to the choir, so it's not like there will be any interesting political discourse going on.
3. People forget that the purpose of the convention is to name a nominee for the presidency. I wonder who will be the nominee for the Dems by the end of the week? Do you think Kerry will pull it out? I just don't know! The race between him and Dennis Kucinich is so close and exciting!
4. Baseball is on. Baseball is far more important than watching three days of prepared-for-TV party propaganda. Especially if you have the Extra Innings Package (Ross).

Yes, watching the Democratic Convention is not for everyone. And I will not dispute that no news is being made at it. Fine. Let me clarify something (I wasn't at all clear in my post last night): I watched the first few innings of the game and turned it off.

In light of that, let me relay a story about last season. The Sox were in it most of last season, in fact, I think they were in it until about Sept. 15, then got swept in a series on Sept 16-18 in Minneapolis. Despite having the Extra Innings package, I couldn't watch it anymore. I was so fed up with the team, I couldn't stand to watch it for the rest of the year.

That happened last night. As soon as I saw Radke had a four-run lead, I turned it off. It wasn't to the same degree as the '03 season, but, I had something better to watch.

Living in Washington, politics is a much bigger part of my life than it was in Chicago or Columbia. So, I've been following the race quite closely. And last night, for me, was a chance to see the dominant politician of my formative years (and his wife and his VP) give interesting speeches. That was important to me.

Am I going to watch tonight? I'll be at work, so I won't be able to watch it more than as background. Will I watch it tomorrow? Probably not, as I don't care about the speakers. I will surely watch on Thursday to see Zombie Kerry try to introduce himself to voters.

Politics (specifically the Democrats), this year in this town, is nearly as important to me as baseball. The Democrats are my team as much as the Sox, Bulls and Bears are.

From the Hardball Times: 15) The A's released 1B Eric Karros. Karros had been removed from the 25 and 40 man rosters when he was designated for assignment on Tuesday.

I guess this means he's off the Handsome Man Team. Adios, Senor Karros.
