Grip it and rip it
I am not a particularly patriotic person, but since living in Washington, I really identify myself as an American. Like most people, I don't believe in blind patriotism, but I am American, for better or for worse. I own no flags, I don't care much for American cars and I don't even eat at McDonald's.
That said, I do follow a few American Olympic sports. I followed Team USA's Gold Medal win in baseball back in 2000 and, since the baseball team didn't qualify, I have been following USA Basketball's play.
And after laying an egg today, I don't know how easy of a team this is to root for. The Yanks (Yanks as in Team USA) lost today, 92-73, and looked absolutely terrible. To a man, Team USA looked bad. Allen Iverson, team captain and my favorite non-Toni Kukoc basketball player, shot OK but generally didn't play well. Tim Duncan, the other captain and the team's steadiest player, looked awful. Dwyane Wade took all kinds of stupid shots. Basically, no one looked good.
I consider Phil Jackson the best coach in the NBA, but I like Larry Brown a lot (I'll root for any Jewish coach). But, his idea of getting the extra pass doesn't seem to be helping this team. While I concede that the Yanks don't have spectacular shooters, Tim Duncan, LeBron James and Carlos Boozer can all rebound better than most players in the Olympics. Just grip it and rip it. Too many times today, I saw some guy give up an open shot for the prospect of a more open shot. This is absurd. Grip it and rip it. Don't drive, don't bang down low. Grip it and rip it.
