Idiocy

I doubt anyone who read this (Hello, Taft) doesn't know this, but Steve Phillips (and much of the national baseball media) is an idiot. Tonight, on ESPN, he said Scott Rolen should be the NL MVP. Let's review:

Name: VORP
Player A: 99.0
Player B: 69.3
Player C: 64.6
Player D: 61.7

OK, got that? Don't understand VORP? Fine, here's the quick and dirty route.

Name: OPS
Player A: 1.380
Player B: 1.051
Player C: 1.022
Player D: 1.048

Which would you vote for MVP?

I'm sorry, but 30 points of VORP (approximately three wins. Three wins!) is too much to overcome with good defense. Player B would have to be Ozzie Smith to best Player A. And, of course, Player B doesn't even play shortstop, he plays third base.

A: Barry Bonds
B: Scott Rolen
C: Albert Pujols
D: Jim Edmonds

Come on, Barry Bonds is way too good not to be MVP

That is an amazing list, for several reasons:

1. First and foremost, Barry Lamar Bonds. I knew that he was still the greatest hitter in the game, leading the world in OPS, etc... but 30 points of VORP? That's loco in the cabeza.

2. The other three members of this list are obviously great hitters and are (at least) NL MVP candidates. And they all play for the fucking St. Louis Cardinals.

Put this in your pipe and smoke it: There are currently 8 guys in the whole NL who have OPSs of 1.000 or higher. 3 of those guys play for the St. Louis Cardinals. Those 3 guys currently rank 3rd, 4th and 5th in OPS in the NL (Bonds, Helton).

Here's what I wonder: has any team ever (other than these cardinals) fielded the best three out of five offensive forces in the whole league?

Also, as a Cardinal Hater, I am taking some solace in the fact that 3 (worthy) MVP candidates on one team will likely split the vote, which may result in Barry Bonds receiving his 7th! MVP award, which, as Ross showed us so nicely in his blog, he is most deserving of.

I was mistaken in my first post. Thirty points of VORP is equal to 10 wins, not three wins. This makes Mr. Bonds' achievements that much more loco en la cabeza.
